Importance of 30 day Taraweeh prayer during Ramadan

A major part of the essence of Ramadan comes from praying the Tarawih prayers after Isha salah. For the entire month, mosques all over the world are full of Muslims standing in prayer, listening to the complete recitation of the Holy Qur’an. It is indeed a special spiritual blessing bestowed upon us, and we strive to complete this month in attendance of the Tarawih prayers, building on the foundation of our 5 daily salah.

Taraweh is ‘sunnah mu’akkadah’, a confirmed practice of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, pbuh. Abu Hurayrah (ra) said:

“The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to urge the people to pray night prayers in Ramadan without him authoritatively ordering them to do so.” The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever stands at night prayer in Ramadan while believing in Allah Who prescribed it, and while seeking its reward from Him, will have his past sins forgiven.

Among the many blessings of these prayers is that all of your past sins can be forgiven, performing Tarawih counts as praying for the entire night, these voluntary prayers can make up for shortfalls in your obligatory prayers, and your heart will be filled with ease.

Because the Tarawih prayer is not obligatory, there is no sin if you miss it. But try not to neglect it - Allah swt does not benefit from our prayers, but we have everything to gain. May Allah swt grant us the strength to perform the Tarawih prayers in a way that pleases Him. Ameen.
