What Size Prayer Mat Do I Need? Adult, Kids and Toddler Sizes

The junior Twilight Masjid padded prayer mat shown with its measurements marked, 100cm long by 60cm wide

Short answer

Our adult padded prayer mats are listed at 130 x 73cm, 120 x 64cm or 115 x 67cm, depending on the range. Our junior kids mats are 100 x 60cm and suit children of about 8–12. For most people, choosing comes down to one question: does your forehead land on the mat in sujood with room to spare? If you are tall, do the quick floor test below before you buy.

These are the dimensions and padding we list for the Urban Rugs UK padded mats we distribute.

Mat Open size Padding Best for
Luxury Sage Arch padded mat 130 x 73cm 1.7cm Tall adults, or anyone who wants more room all round
Adult premium padded mats, including the Madinah range 120 x 64cm 1.7cm Adults and teenagers
Adult original padded mats 115 x 67cm 1.3cm Adults who prefer a slightly wider mat
Junior kids padded mats, including the Mumbai Mosque designs 100 x 60cm 1.3cm Children aged about 8 to 12
Toddler mats with pom-pom trim (Midday and Midnight in Mecca) 85 x 47cm 1.3cm Little ones praying beside you
Pocket travel mats Makkah about 68 x 113cm open; Stone about 64 x 114cm open None — these are not padded Travel, work and the car

Every figure here is taken from the size chart on that product’s own page, checked on 19 October 2026. Two notes on precision: the Madinah designs share one size chart, so 120 x 64cm is the figure for the range rather than a promise for each design; and the Mumbai Mosque size is the size of that design, whatever a particular photo happens to show.

Why more than one adult size? The 115 x 67cm original mats are 5cm shorter and 3cm wider than the 120 x 64cm premium mats — the extra width helps if you like room for your elbows in sujood, the extra length helps if you are tall. The Luxury Sage Arch is bigger again at 130 x 73cm, which is the one to choose if you have ever run out of mat in front of your head.

There is no single standard prayer mat size in cm. Sizes vary a lot between makers, so always check the listing rather than assuming.

How to measure for the right prayer mat dimensions

You only need a tape measure and two minutes.

1. Stand on a clear bit of floor where your feet would be on the mat.

2. Go down into sujood as you normally would.

3. Ask someone to mark the floor just beyond the top of your head, and just behind your heels.

4. Measure between the two marks. That is the length you need.

5. For width, measure across your hands in sujood and add a little space either side.

Compare your length with 120cm and 115cm. If your number is close to either, choose the longer mat.

Also measure the space where the mat will live. A 120cm mat needs a clear strip of floor facing the qiblah, with room to stand behind it.

For children, the right size depends on height more than age.

Junior mats (about 8–12)

Our junior mats measure 100 x 60cm with 1.3cm padding. The Twilight Masjid junior padded prayer mat is a good example. A tall 11 or 12 year old may already need an adult mat, so do the floor test with them too.

Toddler mats

Toddlers do not need a full-length mat. At this age, most of the time they sit on it, copy one movement, then wander off. A small, soft mat of their own beside yours makes them feel part of the family prayer. You can see the designs in our kids and toddler padded prayer mats collection.

Toddler mats have a pom-pom trim. Keep an eye on very young children who like to pull at trims.

When a child needs an adult mat

If your child's head goes past the end of their mat in sujood, it is time to move up. There is no need to wait for a birthday.

Thickness and padding

Padding matters as much as size, especially on hard floors.

  • 1.7cm is our thickest padding. It is used on most of our adult mats, including the premium, luxury and Madinah ranges. Good for knee or joint pain, tiled or wooden floors, and long prayers such as Taraweeh.
  • 1.3cm is used on the original adult mats, the junior mats and the toddler mats. Lighter to carry, and still soft underfoot.

Depending on the design, the adult mats have a white cotton back layer or a non-slip backing. The kids and toddler mats have a non-slip backing. Both help the mat sit steady on smooth floors.

If you are still deciding, our guide on how to choose your prayer mat covers fabric and design. For more on comfort, read why people are buying padded prayer mats.

Not sure? Do the floor test, then pick the longer mat. Too long is never a problem. Too short is.
